His Missa Ecce ancilla Domini follows the tradition of masses built on pre‑existing material, in this case a Gregorian antiphon with Mary’s words at the Annunciation. In a clear and balanced style, Dufay brings melodic lines and polyphonic structures together to create a delicate, introspective whole. These works offer a clear insight into the evolution of his musical language. Italian influences, absorbed during his time in Rome, enter into a compelling dialogue with the clarity and sensitivity of the French style. In this music, fluid declamation and a subtle sense of phrasing consistently support the sacred text.
