A concert featuring music by Handel and his main contemporaries from 18th-century London. Shortly after his arrival in London in 1711, Georg Friedrich Handel quickly established a leading position in English musical life, which is not surprising given the steady flow of masterpieces that poured from his pen: operas, oratorios, concerti, sonatas, etc.; moreover, he was an unmatched musician. Orkest Barock Sommer is back with an exciting program! This time inspired by London, which was a vibrant musical center in the 18th century. All composers whose works you will hear today lived and worked there for a time. The economic prosperity of the era propelled music to unprecedented heights. Thus, London became a magnet: composers were well-paid and wrote the most beautiful works. You can enjoy two lively overtures and two playful symphonies. As a highlight, the promising Vicente Romero Carrilero will perform a dancing and also brilliantly lyrical flute concerto by Bach's youngest son Johann Christian. Yala Music performs the opera RODRIGO by G.F. Händel in the Amstelkerk! Yala Music Opera Collective brings “Rodrigo” by Händel: a gripping drama about a kingdom torn apart by hatred and intrigue. King Rodrigo has a child with his mistress. He thinks this is convenient, as there is now at least an heir. However, the mistress turns out to be very ambitious, and wants Rodrigo to dethrone his wife. Rodrigo is not keen on this. The court becomes completely polarized. At the moment Rodrigo literally has a knife to his throat and there’s no escaping it, his beloved wife brings everyone to reconsider. She says: What if we all step over our egos, forgive each other for what has happened, and work together towards a better world… Whether it is 707, 1707, or 2026: the struggle between power and compassion is timeless. With its version of Rodrigo, Yala Music creates a production that invites the audience to reflect on the legacy to the next generation and on themselves. For, as the subtitle of Rodrigo states: conquering oneself is ultimately the true victory. In 2025, Stichting Yala Music, together with Ensemble Musica Poetica, staged the opera La Calisto. Composer Boris Bezemer presents The Quiet and The Stormy Sea. In this performance The Black Sea represents the main work: a 40-minute musical journey played on tenor recorder. The sound of a silent sea that rises into a storm and then calms down again is being framed by two works for recorder, double bass and hyperorgan. One of these two works was written exclusively for Orgelpark. The Black Sea was written commissioned by the almost completely deaf-blind graphic artist Edouard J. Philippe Lindemans in exactly 9,600 Braille characters, so that it fits into six grids of forty by forty. These grids have been depicted by the visual artist on six panels with tens of thousands of nails that, in their own way, represent the Black Sea. The music, hidden within these panels, has never been performed to date. Guy Maori, Harpsichord The Ruckers harpsichord was the showpiece instrument of its age. The Ruckers family of Antwerp were the most celebrated harpsichord builders in the Low Countries, and their instruments set the standard across Europe for nearly two centuries. With two manuals and contrasting registers, instruments like these allowed players to switch quickly between different sounds, including the 'forte' and 'piano' effects found in some works by Bach. The choir has already performed this magnificent masterpiece more than 150 times! A stage for all The Concertgebouw is right at the heart of Dutch music. That is why we love to welcome the best amateur orchestras and choirs of the Netherlands. To an amateur musician a performance at the Concertgebouw is always special, often marking the end of an extensive period of rehearsals. Please note: although these concerts are of a high standard, they are not performed by professional ensembles.
